October so far

Wow!! Has it already been a month since Camp Floyd?!
Time is going by so fast.

Here's a little of what we've been up to:

Math: We are starting to dive into more challenging concepts. Students: Please do not get behind on your homework!! And please do not hesitate to ask questions whenever we review our homework in class. It is absolutely vital that you stay on top of your homework and understand the concepts. Math builds upon itself and it will become overwhelmingly difficult if you do not understand each concept.

Science/Social studies: We have been learning about rocks & minerals as well as the Native Americans that first lived in Utah. Monday will be out last day of the unit and then Mrs. Taylor's class will be joining me! My favorite lesson we did in science was the rock cycle. It was an inquiry lesson involving Starbursts, so the students didn't know they were doing the rock cycle until the very end. It was so fun seeing their faces light up.

Language arts: We have been discussing various concepts such as setting, characters (protagonist and antagonist), and plot. To understand each of these concepts, we read Sleepy Hollow together as a class. Some of the students were very upset that the protagonist didn't get a happy ending. We also discussed the word, ambiguous because we don't know exactly what happened at the end. Just before Fall Break, we watched Told by Glenn Close: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Told by Glenn Close with Music by Tim Story

The boys had a lot of fun pretending they were scared and hugging each other. I really enjoyed this version of Sleepy Hollow

Homeroom: The whole school had a bucket decorating contest for a food drive. Some students in my homeroom chose to do a haunted UP house in honor of my classroom theme and Halloween. I only helped a little and it turned out so good!!

We won 3rd place which meant candy for the whole class!

The day before Fall Break, we celebrated Hailey's birthday with a class party. Her mom came in with the most delicious sugar cookies and then let all of us decorate them into monsters! I don't know who was more excited-the students or me!

Happy Fall Break!!
